Stone Speaker: Medieval Tombs, Landscape, and Bosnian Identity in the Poetry of Mak Dizdar
Published in Unknown Binding by Palgrave MacMillan (E) (May, 2002)
Authors: Amila Buturovic and Francis Jones
Average review score:

It's worth the price
This is actually two books in one jacket. The first is a brilliant study of the works of the Bosnian poet Mak Dizdar by Amila Buturovic, a professor of religion and humanities at York University. It is at the same time a literary criticism, a cultural biography, and an exploration of personal and social identity. It is a great introduction to Dizdar as well as a beautifully written study of Bosnian culture. It would be a much better introduction to the country, for somebody interested, than almost any of the books by journalists who were there during the war and that clutter the shelves of bookstores.

However what makes this book essential is that this is the first publication ever in the West, in English translation, of Mak Dizdar's seminal work Stone Sleeper (Kameni spavaè). The translation was a 20-year work of love by Francis R. Jones, and he describes, in a moving opening essay, the difficulty and rewards of the translation process. The Stone Sleeper text itself is reproduced in its entirety, with the English translation side-by-side. This is an beautiful way to read the text, whether or not one knows any Bosnian, and it is the heart and soul of this book.

One can't delve too far into Bosnia without coming across Mak Dizdar. Bosnians will tell you about Ivo Andriè and, even more so, Meša Selimovic when they recommend prose works about Bosnia by Bosnian authors. When they recommend poetry they mention Mak Dizdar. This book explains why.

Stone Spirits (Redd Center Publications)
Published in Paperback by Brigham Young University Press (October, 1997)
Author: Susan Elizabeth Howe
Average review score:

Gifted, sensitive poet
Poetry is highly personal. Howe has a voice that penetrates deeply, for me and for many of the other poetry-loving friends who have read this book. Howe's work is not harsh, hard or cynical. She speaks to the meditative, the gently ironic, and the essentially life-affirming sides of my consciousness. She combines deep compassion with a masterful command of the language. What an accomplished wordsmither. Definitely worth a try.

The Stone That Became a Mountain: Getting It Right About the Kingdom of God
Published in Paperback by Christian Focus (November, 2001)
Author: Richard Bewes
Average review score:

Knowing the future helps
In this very readable and helpful book Bewes sets out to remind us of the greatness and inevitable triumph of what we as Christians belong to. His point is that we are part of Christ's Kingdom, the stone that unavoidably, inexorably and relentlessly, in Daniel's dream, grew to become a mountain. This is a vital vision for us in the 21st century. He says, "If we lose sight of that, then with the rest of the world we shall lurch on, baffled by every twist and turn of this chaotic age."

He writes simply and clearly, and with great illustrations from history, from his own vast experience, both worldwide and in a busy multicultural London congregation. Here is a book that will encourage you to keep going and growing in the Christian life. As he says, "Knowing the future helps."

And for those of you who haven't yet checked it out, he also has a superb little commentary on Revelation, "The Lamb Wins."

The best book on the thinking man's rural life
John Jerome has created a masterpeice, any person who enjoys thinking about physical work will delight in. Stone's Brigade and the Fight for the McPherson Farm
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (01 November, 2000)
Author: James J. Dougherty
Average review score:

A must for the Gettysburg historian!
Mr. Dougherty uses extensive primary source information to tell the first accurate history of Stone's Bucktail Brigade at Gettysburg. His extensive research and committment to telling a provocative story is evident. His appendixes are as good as the main text of the book giving extensive supporting documentation. I can't believe this book is not yet more widely known by the Gettysburg history crowd!
